At the Scene

  1. Check on people first. If anyone is injured, call 911 immediately. If the vehicles are drivable and it’s safe, move them out of traffic — Oklahoma law expects you to clear the roadway when possible.
  2. Call the police for anything beyond a scratch. An official report makes everything that follows — fault, claims, an uninsured other driver — dramatically simpler.
  3. Exchange information. Name, phone, insurance company and policy number, license plate, driver’s license. Photograph their insurance card rather than copying it by hand.
  4. Document everything. Photos of all vehicles from multiple angles, the wider scene, skid marks, traffic signs, and any visible injuries. Get names and numbers of witnesses.
  5. Don’t discuss fault. Be polite, be helpful, and let the police report and the adjusters do their jobs. Even “I’m sorry” can be quoted later.

If the Other Driver Has No Insurance

This happens more than you’d think: about 12% of Oklahoma drivers carry no insurance at all. If you’re hit by one of them, your recovery runs through your own policy — specifically uninsured motorist (UM) coverage for injuries and collision coverage for your vehicle. This is exactly why we push UM coverage so hard when we build auto policies. If you don’t know whether you have it, that’s a five-minute phone call worth making today, before you ever need it.

In the Days After

  • Call us. Seriously — this is what your agent is for. We’ll help you understand what your policy covers, whether filing makes sense for a small loss, and how the process will go. You never have to face an adjuster cold.
  • Report the claim promptly. Late reporting is one of the most common ways claims get complicated.
  • See a doctor if anything hurts. Soft-tissue injuries often show up a day or two later, and a medical record connects them to the accident.
  • Keep every receipt — towing, rental car, medical bills, even rideshares while your car is in the shop.

Before It Ever Happens

The best time to prepare for an accident is at renewal. Make sure your liability limits are above the state minimum, your UM coverage matches, and your deductibles are numbers you can live with. We’re an independent agency in Edmond — one call and we’ll review all of it across our carriers at no cost.
