What 25/50/25 Actually Means
To drive legally in Oklahoma you need liability coverage of at least 25/50/25: $25,000 for bodily injury per person, $50,000 for bodily injury per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. Those numbers satisfy the law. The question is whether they’d satisfy the hospital.
Where the Minimum Runs Out
Picture an ordinary accident on I-35 or the Broadway Extension: you’re at fault, two people in the other car are injured, and their vehicle is totaled. A single emergency room visit with imaging and a short stay can pass $25,000 quickly, and the average new car costs more than the $25,000 property-damage limit all by itself. Everything above your limits doesn’t disappear — it comes from you. Your savings, your home equity, your future wages.
State minimums are the floor the legislature set. They were never meant to be a recommendation.
The Other Driver Problem
Coverage isn’t only about what you might cause — it’s about what might hit you. About 12% of Oklahoma drivers are uninsured, and nationally it’s worse: more than one in seven drivers (15.4%) carry no insurance. If one of them hits you, their empty policy pays for exactly nothing.
That’s what uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage is for. It steps in for your injuries when the at-fault driver has no coverage or not enough. For what it adds to a premium, it’s some of the best protection money in the policy.
What We Actually Recommend
Every family’s numbers are different, but the pattern is consistent:
- Raise your liability limits well above 25/50/25 — the jump in premium is usually smaller than people expect.
- Carry UM/UIM that matches your liability limits.
- Consider an umbrella policy if you own a home or have savings to protect — it adds $1 million or more of liability coverage across your auto and home policies for a relatively small premium.
